Try to get to Mallorca before the crowds do, it´ll make the experience all the more wonderful. We drove the curvy and narrow roads of the sunny islands in the beginning of May and loved it! As the French say: la joie de vivre! Find my recommendations below!
Where to stay:
- try and stay in a small local villa in a small local village! It´ll make the trip all the more authentic. We stayed in Ca´n Roig and absolutely loved it! Also – the price and quality ratio is excellent!
What to do:
- visit the daily markets around the island. It´s great for people-watching, fresh food shopping, souvenir-shopping and wandering around the beautiful old towns! We visited the ones in Port Pollenca, Pollenca, Alcudia and Palma.
- Drive to small hidden beaches. Cala San Vicente one has an amazing blue water, but the road to Formentor beach is an adventure in its own.
- Palma is one of the most wonderful cities we´ve visited (and we´ve visited a lot of them :). It has an amazing old-town, port and sea, markets and food, people and buzz…
- Cap Formentor is the Northernmost tip of the island and the road there is breathtaking as well as scary as hell! 🙂
- Climb the 365 steps of the calvary stairs of Pollenca. The views from above are worth the effort!
- Stroll the little villages, they´re full of romantic orange and olive groves!
What to eat:
- Seafood, seafood, seafood! We mostly cooked our own – octopus, huge sweet shrimps, squids, fish etc. But of course, you can find them fresh from any good restaurant.
- Pa amb oli is the local bread, grilled, seasoned with garlic and tomato and served with local cured ham.
- Sobrassada is the local spicy sausage, a bit similar to chorizo! Great with bread and other tapas to accompany the local wines!
- The local sweet – ensaimada, was not our favourite. But hey, it´s all about the taste! 🙂
